OUR STORY

Bras Basah Complex, nestled in the heart of Singapore’s core district, stands as a testament to the city-state’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant artistic scene. Originally built in the 1980s, the complex was a diligent host of small-scale Xinyao recitals, book fairs and art exhibitions that were immensely popular with the locals. Situated right in the heart of town, the Bras Basah area was the traditional location for book stores. It came as no surprise that with its establishment, the Bras Basah Complex attracted a myriad of well-known book merchants, even those from other districts, to become tenants, bringing its reputation of being the Book City of Singapore.

Fast forward to today, its strategic location, nestled amidst prestigious educational institutions such as the Singapore Management University and the School of the Arts, contributed to its role as a hub of intellectual and creative activity. Over time, Bras Basah Complex has emerged as a focal point for the arts, attracting a diverse array of artists, musicians, and cultural enthusiasts. The influx of music schools and art galleries has been instrumental in reshaping the complex’s identity, turning it into a thriving arts and cultural hub.

BRAS BASAH COMPLEX
MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION

BBCMA was founded in the beginning of the 1980s. At that time, many book merchants from Bras Basah Road and North Bridge Road as well as merchants in other districts dealing in books and related trades took up shop space in BBC. In order to settle common problems and to protect their interest as well as to improve communication, the merchants at the BBC founded Bras Basah Complex Shopholders' Association led by

  • Mr Chow Li Liang of Union Bookstore

  • Mr Zhang Kerun of International Bookshop

  • Mr C C Low of Sheng Enterprise

  • Mr Leong Qingjing of Far East Book Publishers and others.

Mr C C Low of Sheng Enterprise was the Chairman of the First Term Committee. The Bras Basah Complex Shop Holders' Association changed its name to Bras Basah Complex Merchants' Association in the 1990s.
